Narration Script:
Brixton. A bright town full of vibrant colour and culture, foods that will enrich your tastebuds and island music that will make your soul dance. A place where people from different creeds and ethnicities can come together and celebrate the gift of diversity.
But it wasn’t always this way.
The 21st of June 1948 is when we arrived onto the shores of a dreary country. The British people had colonised the West Indies and we were brought up to think of the United Kingdom as king. Singing western nursery rhymes depicting England as a fairytale world that we would thrive in.
We were promised jobs, security and stability if we sailed over and built up Britain into the empire it is today. But instead, we were faced with cultural differences that we couldn’t fathom, poverty and blatant racism from the people that hired us for heavy labor with little pay.
We realized that we had to build ourselves up.
Creating a multicultural environment in a vast community of Caucasian folks was going to be difficult. But we overcame our fears and started to cook. Started to create. Started to love again. Soon, we would have a place to call our own.
Brixton. Be our guest.
(cut to "Be our guest" sign in Brixton)
