Hello.
Today we were given the task to create a short film using mostly still recordings, 3 medium shots and 3 close ups (varying between extreme close up and a standard close up.) Another requirement is that you had to use a prop. In my case, I chose a phone, as it was practical and it is very common to see teenagers attached to their mobile devices 24/7.
This task gave us the chance to meet new people, and so I worked with two girls, noelia and fredericca. We used a monopod instead of a tripod as the other people in the class got to choose their equipment before us. I've never worked with a monopod before and I found it rather difficult to capture still shots as it was a windy, yet very sunny day and the monopod kept moving around. This was one of my faults in this process. I used the sun to my advantage though, going to the college's local park and using the natural lighting.
Editing
After shooting, I was asked to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the footage. Being that it was my first time using this software (and editing footage), it was actually really easy to use. Once I adapted to the technicalities, I edited the shots in a way that told a story about two girls meeting up and bonding in a park. The razor tool was my favourite tool in premiere, as it made my cutting process easier. I also worked with the effects tab, using fade-to-black transitions to make the cuts look natural instead of looking like jump cuts. Lastly, I used the colour tab to colour correct any scenes that looked too bright as i'd found it quite difficult to adjust the ISO to the same setting every time, which left some scenes looking darker than they should've been.
When exporting, I forgot to export the audio, which left my production with no sound and I had to go back into premiere and import the bgm again. This wasted my class time, but now I know not to make small mistakes and that I need to double check my settings before I export files.
Here is the finished clip.
Evaluation
What I learnt :
- How to edit and use Abode Premiere Pro.
- How to colour correct.
- How to cut, fade and insert audio into a film clip.
- To work with peers while filming.
Things that I need to improve on :
- I need to practise using a monopod as sometimes I may have no choice in various types of equipment.
- Record what ISO settings I am using when filming so I won't have scenes that unintentionally contrast in colour and lighting scheme.
- How to edit to a higher caliber.
- Double check my settings before I export to avoid troubleshooting and errors.
